Recorded on March 7, 1953, this is an interview with Povla Frijsh, one of the finest art song interpreters of the early 20th century. Following this historical conversation, selected recorded works illustrating Ms. Frijsh’s mastery of the art song are heard, as well as a smaller selection of art songs performed by Lorri Lail. Paula Frisch (she later changed the spelling of her last name), was born in Denmark in 1881, the daughter of a physician. She first studied piano and musical theory at...

The slaveholders of the New World faced military challenge not only from slaves in open revolt but also from those who fled the plantations, grouped themselves in runaway communities, and waged guerrilla warfare. These maroons (cimarrones, marrons, quilombolos) plagued every slave society in which mountains, swamps, or other terrain provided a hinterland into which slaves could flee. Some maroon communities became powerful enough to force the European powers into formal peace treaties designed...

Another cleverly written and interesting book by this prolific author of books about the sea for teenage boys. The time of the story is the very beginning of the nineteenth century, at which time the British were at war with France. The task of a privateersman is to act as a licensed pirate, preying on enemy ships. The hero is very successful at all this, and eventually is offered a permanent commission in the Royal Navy. Makes a good audiobook. Harry Collingwood (1851-1922). Pseudonym of...

A very interesting book. It certainly brings home the problems faced by the various Dissenting sects in England in the reign of James the Second, particularly those facing the Quakers. It tells the story of a Quaker family, who fled from England to seek a new life in America in the late 1600s. It's a short book, and it makes a very good read, or of course a good audiobook. As reviewer I found it most instructive. Kingston, William Henry Giles (1814-1880), English novelist, son of Lucy Henry...

LibriVox recording of Comic History of the United States, by Bill Nye. Read by Allyson Hester. This text takes the reader on a comical journey from the time of the first European settlement through the Civil War. The author's caustic wit is evident throughout the book in his numerous sarcastic and humorous remarks. The reader will enjoy a "different" type of history book based on facts, yet caustically embellished for entertainment purposes. (Summary by Allyson Hester) For further...

Nathaniel "Nat" Turner (October 2, 1800 â November 11, 1831) was an American slave who led a slave rebellion in Virginia on August 21, 1831 that resulted in 56 white deaths and over 55 black deaths[2], the largest number of fatalities to occur in one uprising prior to the American Civil War in the southern United States.
